Famiglia Statella

From Sicily’s Mount Etna, one of the most talked about terroirs in the modern wine world, comes the eye-popping debut
of a rising star.

Establishing himself as a brilliant student and graduating at the top of his class from the University of Milan in viticulture, Calogero Statella’s impressive career took off.

Plucked from University to work with Italian wine giant Mezzacorona,

Calogero paved his way and became winemaker at the famed Tenuta delle Terre Nere in 2007.  After nearly 10 years at the helm of an Italian great, Calogero and his wife Rita purchased the small 1ha plot “Pettinociarelle’ beginning their life long dream in 2016.

This organic ‘cru’ vineyard Pettinocciarelle is located in the Solicchiata township and lays on the equivalent of Burgundy’s Routes des Grands Cru, a stretch of high-elevation sites on the volcano’s north slope at 756 meters above sea level and famous for its rich volcanic soil.

Organically farmed from the beginning, these 15 year old vines produced Statella’s first vintage the same year they were purchased. The wine, 90% Nerello Mascalese, Etna’s famous native grape, and 10% Nerello Cappuccio,  is medium-bodied with silky texture, having perfumed aromatics reminding one of a well-made Burgundian Pinot Noir alongside Mediterranean Châteauneuf finesse.

Rockstar wine acumen paired with an incredibly delicious first vintage, Calogero Statella is deemed as a winemaker to watch. With only 5000 bottles made, we are honoured to share Statella wine with you…the first vintage up, of what will most definitely become a bona fide star.
